Casulo de Malhoa / Cocoon of Malhoa was the residence of the Portuguese artist José Vital Branco Malhoa (1855 - 1933) who was a pioneer of Naturalism in Portugal - art based on true representation of nature. Built in 1898, the house was restored as a memorial of José Malhoa who painted many of his artworks there and where he died.
Also on the ground floor of this building is the Chess Museum / Museu do Xadrez which was opened in 2013. There are many exhibits of chess boards, photographs, books, chess games, postcards, stamps and posters.

Municipal Gardens / Jardim Parque Municipal
Take a stroll round this beautiful garden which was constructed in 1930. There is a children's play area and sports facilities.
The granite Torre da Cadeia was built in 1506. In 1994 it was restored and converted into a look-out point from which you can see a magnificent view of
Figueiró dos Vinhos and the surrounding area.
Opening hours: Weekdays: 10.00 -13.00 / 15.00-18.00. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 10.00-17.00
The 15th century Parish Church / Igreja Matriz dominates the centre of Figueiró dos Vinhos. The building covers a wide range of architectural styles and holds many important works of religious art.

River Beaches
Within a few kilometres from Figueiró dos Vinhos are some superb river beaches where you can swim in beautiful clear water.
At Praia Fluvial das Fragas de S. Simão the water is surrounded by the huge boulders, on which you can abseil, slide. There is also a bar, picnic area, toilets and changing rooms.
At Praia Fluvial de Aldeia Ana de Aviz there is lawn, a bar / terrace, parking area and picnic area with barbecue.

Shist Village / Casal de S. Simão
Not to be missed is a look round the 23 restored shist dwellings of Casal de S. Simão which is a 15 minute walk from the Fragas de S. Simão river beach. Casal de S. Simão is part of a network of 27 shist villages / Aldeias do Xisto spread over the region of Central Portugal.
